As a student intern with the SUNY Canton University Police Department, there are many responsibilities that you will need to understand. Due to the nature of the employment, a University Police Officer may sometimes be involved with dangerous activities. All interns must sign a waiver, releasing the University Police Department, SUNT Canton, or any employee thereof from potential liability.
While on duty as an intern, you are required to dress appropriately and maintain a positive image. No blue jeans or t-shirts will be allowed. Male interns will also be required to be clean shaven.
It is the responsibility of the intern to contact the supervising officer to arrange the hours that will be worked. The intern must work 40 hours for each credit hour (i.e., 120 hours for 3 credit hours–or approximately 8 hours per week for 15 weeks).
The student intern will also be required to keep a log of the dates and times worked, with the activities that were performed during that time also logged. The intern will be required to have the officer that he/she worked with sign the log for verification. This log will need to be submitted to the University Police Department and to the student’s Academic Advisor upon completion of the internship. If the student intern is required to complete a term paper on the internship, a copy must also be submitted to the University Police Department, which will be kept on file for future reference
