Student Intern – The Colosseum Fitness Center & Event Planning

Position Summary:
The Griffiss Institute is seeking energetic and dependable student interns to support operations at The Colosseum Fitness Center, located on the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) campus in Rome, NY. Interns will gain hands-on experience in recreation management, customer service, and event planning by assisting with the daily operations of the facility and helping organize athletic events, intramural tournaments, and wellness activities.
Responsibilities:
Fitness Center Operations
- Welcome and check in members, ensuring proper access control and excellent customer service.
- Assist with daily operations, including monitoring equipment use, maintaining cleanliness, and supporting member needs.
- Promote a safe and professional environment for all facility patrons.
Event Planning & Coordination
- Support the planning, promotion, and execution of sporting events, tournaments, and wellness programs.
- Assist with event logistics such as scheduling, registration, scorekeeping, bracket setup, and event-day operations.
- Work with staff and participants to ensure a smooth and enjoyable event experience.
Administrative & Support Duties
- Assist with scheduling, facility usage tracking, and general clerical tasks.
- Help develop and distribute promotional materials (flyers, social media, and internal communications).
- Provide overall support to fitness center staff and GI leadership.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled as a student (preferred majors: Sports Management, Exercise Science, Recreation, Event Management, or related).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; prior customer service experience a plus.
- Reliable, organized, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Interest in fitness, wellness, and recreation programming.
- Ability to work in a professional setting in partnership with AFRL.
