The School of Law at Boston University invites applications for a tenure-track Associate Professor position whose work is at the intersection of tax law and livable and resilient cities. This position is part of BU’s major investment in https://www.bu.edu/convergent-research/, bringing together bold ideas, deep expertise, and perspectives from across disciplines to take on society’s most critical challenges. We seek scholars examining how law and legal institutions shape the experience of cities and urban environments, with particular interest in tax law and its intersections with family, caregiving, inequality, and economic security. Areas of interest may also include discrimination, disability, healthcare decision-making, and personal autonomy. The successful candidate will contribute new perspectives on how legal structures can create or address disparities in economic, physical, and cognitive well-being across the life course.

The position is part of a University-wide cluster hire in Livable and Resilient Cities, which builds on BU’s strength in https://www.bu.edu/convergent-research/urban-development-resilience/. Spanning anthropology, biology, civic data science, environmental health, journalism, learning sciences, political science, sociology, and urban affairs, the cluster draws together BU’s strengths in urban scholarship to advance new approaches to creating healthier, more equitable, and adaptable cities.

Boston University School of Law is a nationally recognized center for legal scholarship addressing complex challenges affecting health, well-being, and quality of life across the lifespan, with its Health Law program currently ranked No. 2 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Faculty conduct influential research on health law, bioethics, disability rights, aging, reproductive justice, public health, data privacy, and the regulation of emerging technologies, helping to shape law and policy at local, national, and global levels. Through interdisciplinary collaboration with scholars across medicine, public health, social work, and the sciences, BU Law advances evidence-based solutions that promote equitable access to care, protect vulnerable populations, and strengthen the legal and policy frameworks that support healthier lives and communities.

Since its founding in 1839, Boston University has embraced a mission of openness and access, becoming one of the first universities in the nation to welcome all students of ability regardless of race, gender, or creed. That tradition shapes our enduring commitment to academic freedom, free inquiry, and the robust exchange of ideas. Please visit https://www.bu.edu/values/ to learn more about our shared values.

We seek scholars who will contribute to our community of teachers and researchers through excellence in innovative scholarship, engaged teaching, and participation in the intellectual life of the University.
